Castro, who made it to the Round of 32 at the FSGA Junior Amateur Match Play this year, started on the 10th hole and got his week off to a good start with a bogey-free 2-under 34 opening nine holes. From there things got a bit bumpy at times for the high school senior but he was able to secure his spot atop the leaderboard with three birdies and three bogeys for an even-par second nine. On the day Castro birdied six holes and bogeyed four.
For Schell it was a six birdie, four bogey day as well. His day got off to a quick start with birdies on three of the first five holes. However, Schell also mixed in a bogey, so after his birdie on the 5th he was 2- under. From there it was an even-par round with three more birdies and three additional bogeys.
The final member of the leading group is Flagler College junior Ryan Mosley. Beginning on No. 1, Mosley parred his first eight holes before rolling in a momentum changing birdie on the 9th to reach red figures. Now at 1-under, Mosely swiftly moved to 4- under with an eagle on the par-5 12th and then a 15th hole birdie. Poised to lead alone after the first round, Mosley slipped up down the stretch as be bogeyed the last two holes.
2017 Auburn commit Brandon Mancheno posted his 1-under 69 via a four birdie, two bogey, one double- bogey round. Mancheno was 3-under until he doubled the 18th hole.
Mike Boss, Mike Stiles and Spenser Slayden are all tied for fifth after even-par 70’s.
